By The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a safety advisory for travelers as heavy snowfall continues across northern Pakistan, affecting major tourist destinations including Murree, Hunza, Skardu, Naran, and adjoining mountainous regions.
According to the PMD, snowfall is expected to persist in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir over the coming days, while most other parts of the country will experience cold and dry weather conditions. The department has cautioned that the ongoing winter spell may lead to slippery roads, reduced visibility, and potential traffic disruptions in hilly areas.
In its official forecast, the PMD stated:
“Cold and dry weather is likely in most parts of the country, while rain and snowfall over the hills is expected in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir and adjoining areas.”
Local administrations and traffic authorities have also urged tourists to remain cautious, especially during peak winter tourism. Officials have warned that steep roads covered with snow and ice can become extremely dangerous, particularly for drivers unfamiliar with mountainous terrain.
Travelers have been advised to check weather forecasts and road conditions before starting their journey and to avoid unnecessary travel during active snowfall or after sunset. Authorities have also emphasized the importance of using snow chains or winter tires in areas where snowfall is heavy.
In addition, tourists are encouraged to carry emergency supplies, including warm clothing, food, drinking water, and sufficient fuel. Following traffic police instructions and local advisories has been stressed as essential for avoiding congestion and accidents.
Officials have specifically advised inexperienced drivers to avoid icy or steep routes, noting that sudden weather changes can lead to road closures without prior notice.
