KP Government Unveils Electric Rickshaw to Support Green and Affordable Transport

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) provincial government, under its ambitious KP Science Agenda, has developed an electric rickshaw aimed at transforming urban transport by reducing fuel dependency, cutting operating costs, and promoting environmentally friendly mobility. Officials say the initiative has the potential to significantly improve the livelihoods of rickshaw drivers while supporting Pakistan’s broader green transportation goals.

According to authorities, the electric rickshaw is designed to minimize fuel consumption and lower repair and maintenance expenses when compared to conventional petrol or CNG-powered rickshaws. With fewer mechanical components and simpler power systems, electric rickshaws generally require less frequent servicing, making them a cost-effective option for daily use.

Higher Earnings for Drivers

Officials highlighted that drivers operating electric rickshaws can earn up to twice as much income compared to traditional rickshaws. Savings on fuel and maintenance directly translate into higher daily profits, particularly for drivers who rely on their vehicles as a primary source of income. This makes the electric rickshaw an attractive alternative amid rising fuel prices and economic pressures.

In addition to financial benefits, electric rickshaws produce zero tailpipe emissions, helping reduce air pollution in congested urban areas. Authorities stated that the project aligns with the provincial government’s efforts to encourage green transportation solutions and reduce the environmental impact of public and semi-public transport.

Showcased at High-Technology Exhibition

Details of the electric rickshaw project were shared during a briefing at a High-Technology and Product Development Exhibition held at the Chief Minister’s House in Peshawar. The exhibition showcased several innovative, locally developed projects launched by the KP government, reflecting the province’s growing focus on research, technology, and indigenous manufacturing.

Organizers provided visitors with insights into the manufacturing process, design features, and practical applications of the showcased products. The electric rickshaw attracted particular attention due to its potential for mass adoption and direct impact on daily transportation needs.

Multiple Local Innovations on Display

In addition to the electric rickshaw, the exhibition featured a wide range of locally developed technologies, including artificial skin for burn treatment, PCR diagnostic kits for Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, HIV, and other diseases, the use of liquid oxygen in mining operations, electronic surgical instruments, and an electronic study card system for students.

These innovations underscore the KP government’s commitment to leveraging science and technology to address healthcare, education, industry, and environmental challenges.

A Step Toward Sustainable Development

Officials said the electric rickshaw project represents a practical step toward sustainable development, combining economic benefits with environmental responsibility. With further development and scaling, the initiative could play a key role in modernizing public transport and supporting clean energy adoption across the province.
