Authorities in Islamabad have significantly expanded the city’s vehicle monitoring system by installing m-tag readers at 11 locations and surveillance cameras at 14 key points across the federal capital. The initiative aims to enhance security, regulate vehicle movement, and enforce the government’s policy of mandatory e-tags for vehicles entering Islamabad.
Safe City Authority Oversees Installation
According to police officials, the installation of the m-tag readers and cameras was supervised by the Islamabad Safe City Authority. The system is designed to read m-tags installed by the Frontier Works Organization (FWO) on vehicles, with facilitation from the capital administration.
All newly installed devices have been integrated into the Safe City Authority’s centralized monitoring network and mounted on newly erected poles to ensure uninterrupted scanning of vehicles.
Locations Equipped with M-Tag Readers
Authorities confirmed that m-tag readers and cameras have been installed at major entry and exit points, including:
- Adventure Inn, Garden Avenue
- Gandum Godown, IJP Road
- Faizabad
- NADRA Headquarters
- N-5 Margalla Iran Avenue
- Bari Imam
- T-Cross
- Marriott Hotel
- D-Chowk
- G-14 N-5 Entry
- Zero Point
- Ninth Avenue
Additionally, cameras have been installed at sensitive and high-traffic areas such as the Foreign Office, Bhara Kahu Bridge, and the E-9 entry point.
Real-Time Monitoring and Alerts
Officials stated that the system automatically scans vehicle m-tags and registration plates in real time. In cases where discrepancies are detected between an m-tag and a vehicle’s registration number, the system generates instant alerts for law enforcement agencies.
The monitoring setup also helps identify vehicles operating without an m-tag, enabling authorities to take swift action against violations.
System Status and Future Enforcement
All installed cameras and readers are currently operational, except those placed at the E-9 entry point near PAF, which are expected to be activated soon.
Earlier, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi emphasized strict enforcement of the e-tag policy, stating that no vehicle will be allowed to enter Islamabad without an e-tag. He made the remarks while speaking to the media outside the Judicial Complex following a suicide attack on November 11, highlighting the importance of improved vehicle screening for public safety.
Strengthening Security in the Capital
Authorities believe the expanded m-tag and camera network will improve traffic management, enhance security screening, and help law enforcement track suspicious vehicles more effectively. The initiative marks another step toward strengthening Islamabad’s smart surveillance infrastructure and ensuring safer movement within the capital.
