Karachi’s long-awaited public transport upgrade is moving closer to reality as the Sindh government has confirmed the arrival of newly imported double-decker buses at the port. The announcement was made on Monday by Sindh Senior Minister and Provincial Transport Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, who stated that the buses will be deployed on Karachi’s roads in the coming days.
Sharing the update on social media, Memon emphasized that the provincial transport department is actively working to introduce these buses as part of a broader effort to improve commuting conditions and modernize the city’s transport infrastructure. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing Karachi’s long-standing mobility challenges through concrete and sustainable solutions.
Part of Broader Transport Reforms
The arrival of double-decker buses follows earlier announcements made in November, when the Sindh government unveiled plans to introduce double-decker buses alongside new electric buses under a comprehensive public transport reform program. These initiatives are aimed at increasing passenger capacity, reducing congestion, and providing affordable and reliable travel options for Karachi’s growing population.
Double-decker buses are expected to play a crucial role in high-demand corridors, as they can carry significantly more passengers than conventional buses without increasing road congestion. Their introduction is also seen as a cost-effective way to maximize road space utilization in one of Pakistan’s most densely populated cities.
Expansion of Bus Fleet Planned This Financial Year
Minister Sharjeel Memon reiterated that the Sindh government plans to expand Karachi’s public bus fleet during the current financial year. According to him, hundreds of new buses will be added to existing routes to meet rising commuter demand and reduce dependence on private vehicles, motorcycles, and informal transport.
The government believes that strengthening public transport will not only ease daily travel difficulties but also help reduce traffic congestion, fuel consumption, and environmental pollution. Karachi’s existing bus network has struggled to keep pace with rapid urban growth, making fleet expansion a critical priority.
Focus on Clean and Sustainable Mobility
In addition to buses, the provincial government is also working on launching an electric vehicle (EV) taxi service in Karachi. This initiative aligns with global trends toward cleaner mobility and reflects Sindh’s intention to gradually shift toward environmentally friendly transport solutions.
With double-decker buses now physically present in the city, expectations are high among commuters. If deployed effectively, the new buses—along with upcoming electric vehicles—could mark a turning point in Karachi’s public transport system and significantly improve the daily commuting experience for millions of residents.
