Islamabad Expands Vehicle Emission Testing Facilities as Crackdown on Pollution Intensifies

In a significant step toward improving air quality in the federal capital, the Islamabad administration has expanded its vehicle emission testing facilities from a single inspection point to four fully operational testing locations. The initiative aims to make emission testing more accessible while ensuring stricter compliance with environmental regulations.

Deputy Commissioner Irfan Nawaz Memon announced that motorists can now get their vehicles tested at Lake View Park, F-9 Park, Metro Cash and Carry, and the original D-Chowk testing site. He personally inspected all four locations and urged citizens to get their vehicles checked on time to ensure cleaner air for the city’s residents.

Mandatory Emission Certificate for All Motorists

Earlier this week, the Islamabad Transport Authority launched a robust crackdown on smoke-emitting vehicles, emphasizing that pollution generated by old and poorly maintained vehicles is a significant contributor to the city’s declining air quality.

As part of this enforcement effort, officials declared that obtaining a Vehicular Emission Clearance Certificate is now mandatory for all drivers. Vehicles that fail to acquire the certificate or emit excessive smoke will not be allowed on Islamabad’s roads, marking a decisive shift toward stricter environmental governance.

Chairman Irfan Memon stressed that smoke-emitting vehicles pose a serious risk to public health and the environment. He reiterated that such vehicles “will not be tolerated” under any circumstances, especially as Islamabad continues to struggle with deteriorating Air Quality Index (AQI) levels during the winter months.

Daily Monitoring and Transparency Measures Rolled Out

To ensure that the crackdown remains transparent and effective, the Deputy Commissioner has instructed field staff to submit daily performance reports. These will help maintain accountability, track progress, and ensure the continuity of the “clean air” enforcement drive.

The expansion of testing points is expected to significantly reduce the burden on motorists while encouraging higher compliance with emission standards. The administration believes that increasing accessibility is key to creating a sustainable and long-term impact on the city’s environment.

A Strong Step Toward a Cleaner Islamabad

With the expansion of emissions testing facilities and the compulsory clearance certificate, Islamabad has taken a major step toward modernizing its environmental enforcement framework. The measures align with the city’s broader vision of promoting eco-friendly habits, reducing pollution, and ensuring a healthier future for its citizens.
