Karachi’s main traffic corridor, Shahrah-e-Faisal, now has officially marked speed limits as part of the city’s ongoing transition toward a fully automated traffic monitoring system. Newly installed signboards along the route aim to guide motorists and support the e-challan mechanism, which has recently been rolled out to improve enforcement and road safety.
According to traffic officials, cars, jeeps, and motorcycles must observe a uniform speed limit of 60 km/h while traveling along Shahrah-e-Faisal. This consistency is intended to prevent unpredictable lane changes and reduce collision risks, especially in high-traffic zones.
For heavier vehicles such as buses and large trucks, the maximum speed has been capped at 30 km/h. Authorities note that heavy vehicles require longer braking distances and carry a higher potential for severe accidents, making lower speed limits essential for safer movement through busy urban corridors.
Smart Cameras to Enforce Speeding Rules
The newly marked limits are directly integrated with Karachi’s advanced smart camera network. Any vehicle exceeding its assigned speed will be automatically detected and recorded by high-precision cameras installed across Shahrah-e-Faisal. The system captures the violation and sends an e-challan to the vehicle’s registered address.
This automated enforcement reduces the need for on-road police stops, allowing smoother traffic flow while ensuring more accurate and transparent monitoring.
Sindh Government Pushes for Modern Traffic Management
The e-challan initiative is part of a wider effort by the Sindh government to modernize traffic regulation in Karachi. Officials believe the move will promote safer driving behavior and significantly lower accident rates on one of the city’s busiest thoroughfares.
To strengthen the system further, authorities are expanding the smart camera network. Hundreds of cameras have already been installed across Karachi, with thousands more planned in upcoming phases. These devices will not only monitor speeding but also detect:
- Red-light violations
- Wrong-lane driving
- Helmetless motorcycle riding
- Other road safety breaches
The goal is to transform Karachi into a city with safer, more predictable traffic patterns supported by automated technology.
Officials Urge Compliance with New Rules
With the updated rules now visually displayed along Shahrah-e-Faisal, traffic authorities are urging motorists to adhere to posted limits and follow safe driving practices. Compliance with the new system, they say, is essential for reducing accidents and ensuring a safer commute for all road users.
As the e-challan network grows, Karachi is steadily moving toward a future of smart traffic management, improved safety, and greater accountability on the roads.
