In a major step toward smart traffic management, the Karachi Traffic Police have issued over Rs 12 million in fines within just a few hours of launching the city’s new e-challan system. The initiative marks a significant milestone in Sindh’s digital transformation drive aimed at improving traffic discipline and road safety.

According to the initial report released by the Traffic Police, the automated system generated a total of 2,662 e-challans in its first few hours of operation. The violations detected included:

  • 419 cases of over-speeding
  • 3 lane violations
  • 4 stop-line breaches
  • 1,535 seat belt violations
  • 166 red-light jumpers
  • 507 motorcyclists without helmets
  • 3 cases of wrong-way driving
  • 7 tinted-window violations
  • 5 cases of illegal parking
  • 32 drivers using mobile phones while driving

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah stated that the new AI-powered surveillance system automatically identifies and records traffic violations across Karachi. The network covers all types of vehicles—cars, motorcycles, and rickshaws—ensuring equal enforcement without human bias or interference.

The chief minister highlighted that this digital e-ticketing system aims to improve public safety, transparency, and service delivery by replacing manual enforcement with camera-based monitoring. “This initiative will bring accountability and discipline on Karachi’s roads,” he added.

Under the broader Safe City Project, authorities plan to expand the number of surveillance cameras to 12,000, eventually extending the system to other major cities across Sindh. The data collected will also help traffic authorities analyze driving patterns and optimize traffic flow in real time.

The e-challan initiative reflects Karachi’s growing commitment to adopting technology-driven governance solutions. By reducing human involvement and corruption, the system promises a fairer, faster, and safer urban transport experience for all road users.
