The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has officially awarded the contract for the long-awaited Shaheen Chowk underpass project, marking a major step toward improving traffic flow in one of Islamabad’s busiest corridors.

According to CDA officials, the formal inauguration ceremony of the project will be held soon. The new underpass will be constructed at Khyaban-i-Iqbal (Margalla Road), where it intersects with 9th Avenue — a key junction that often faces severe congestion, especially during rush hours.

Under the approved design, traffic on Khyaban-i-Iqbal will move through the underpass, while vehicles on 9th Avenue will travel over the upper slab. This engineering layout is expected to streamline vehicle movement and significantly reduce waiting times at the intersection.

Officials highlighted that Shaheen Chowk frequently experiences traffic jams due to the presence of several government offices, educational institutions, and residential areas nearby. Once completed, the underpass is expected to enhance road safety, reduce travel time, and improve connectivity across Islamabad’s northern sectors.

Progress on T-Chowk Flyover

In addition to the underpass development, the CDA has shared an update on the T-Chowk Flyover project, reporting that 46 percent of the construction work has been completed.

The Rs. 1.4 billion project, spanning 1.1 kilometres, is being constructed at the junction of GT Road and the Islamabad Expressway. It aims to facilitate smoother entry and exit for traffic traveling between Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Islamabad, ultimately reducing bottlenecks for daily commuters.

A Step Toward Smarter Urban Mobility

Both infrastructure projects reflect the CDA’s ongoing efforts to modernize Islamabad’s transport network and provide long-term relief from urban congestion. Once completed, the Shaheen Chowk underpass and T-Chowk Flyover are expected to enhance mobility, improve safety, and contribute to the city’s growing need for efficient traffic management.
