Sindh Government to Launch Pakistan’s First EV Taxi Service in December

The Sindh government has announced plans to roll out Pakistan’s first government-run electric vehicle (EV) taxi service by December, with Karachi becoming the pilot city for the project. The initiative, finalized in a meeting chaired by Sindh Senior Minister for Information and Transport, Sharjeel Inam Memon, marks a significant milestone in the country’s transition toward sustainable mobility.

“The Sindh government will be the first in Pakistan to operate a state-run EV taxi service. This project reflects Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari’s vision to introduce safe, modern, and sustainable transport for the public,” Memon said in a statement.

A Step Toward Eco-Friendly Mobility

The upcoming EV taxi fleet is part of the Sindh government’s broader strategy to:

  • Reduce carbon emissions in urban areas
  • Lower dependence on fossil fuels
  • Provide affordable and safe public transport
  • Promote clean energy adoption in Pakistan

This initiative complements global efforts to combat climate change while improving local air quality and reducing traffic-related pollution in Karachi, one of the country’s busiest metropolitan centers.

Women-Exclusive EV Taxis

In line with its earlier gender-sensitive projects, including the Pink Bus Service and Pink Scooty Scheme, the government has announced that a portion of the EV taxi fleet will be reserved exclusively for women passengers. This move is aimed at ensuring safe, reliable, and affordable transportation for women in urban areas.

Broader Impact on Urban Transport

The Sindh EV Taxi Service is expected to reshape Pakistan’s public transport sector. With rising fuel prices and increasing concerns about environmental sustainability, electric mobility offers a cost-effective and forward-looking solution.

By positioning itself as a pioneer in EV-based public transport, the Sindh government is not only introducing a modern commuting option but also signaling a long-term commitment to sustainable development.

The launch of the Sindh EV Taxi Service in December will make Sindh the first province in Pakistan to operate a government-run electric taxi network. Beginning with Karachi, the project is set to provide eco-friendly, gender-inclusive, and affordable transport options, paving the way for a cleaner and smarter urban mobility future.
