The Punjab government has officially confirmed that Lahore will soon have its own tram service, expected to become operational in February 2026. Transport Minister Bilal Akbar announced the development, noting that the decision follows a successful trial run.

In its first phase, the project will connect Thokar to Harbanspura, offering city residents a new and eco-friendly commuting option. Each tram will be able to carry up to 270 passengers, easing congestion on Lahore’s busy roads and strengthening its public transport network.

Cost and Collaboration

The project, estimated at $3 million, is being developed with support from Punjab NESPAK and the Punjab Mass Transit Authority. A delegation of experts recently traveled to China for consultations, ensuring that the system is designed with international expertise and modern standards.

Metro Train Projects in Faisalabad and Gujranwala

Alongside Lahore’s tram initiative, the Punjab government has announced metro train projects in Faisalabad and Gujranwala.

  • Faisalabad Metro Train: Expected to serve 300,000 passengers daily with an investment of $110 million.
  • Gujranwala Metro Train: Designed to accommodate 140,000 riders daily at a cost of $50 million.

These projects highlight Punjab’s commitment to expanding modern mass transit systems beyond Lahore, making urban travel more efficient across the province.

Environmental and Social Benefits

Minister Bilal Akbar emphasized that the tram and metro projects are part of Punjab’s strategy to reduce air pollution caused by motorcycles and other vehicles. By promoting sustainable public transport, the government aims to improve urban mobility, air quality, and overall living standards.

With the introduction of Lahore’s tram service and upcoming metro train systems in Faisalabad and Gujranwala, Punjab is taking significant steps toward modern, eco-friendly, and affordable urban transport. The February 2026 launch of the tram marks the beginning of a new era in Pakistan’s public transport landscape.
