By In response to public feedback and logistical challenges, the Sindh government has officially extended the deadline for adopting the new Ajrak-themed registration number plates for two-wheelers to October 31, 2025. The original deadline was set for August 14, but recent developments led to a focused delay, now applying exclusively to motorbikes and scooters.
The extension follows a statement made by Sindh Excise Minister Mukesh Kumar Chawla, who acknowledged mounting concerns during a session of the Sindh Assembly, suggesting that the government would consider postponement due to widespread public inconvenience.
What Are Ajrak Number Plates?
The new number plates are part of Sindh’s Safe City Project, and they feature a unique Ajrak-inspired design—a nod to the province’s cultural heritage. More importantly, they integrate advanced security features that traditional plates lack, such as:
- Embedded security threads
- 3D holograms
- Barcodes
- Camera-readable reflective backgrounds, functional even in low light
These enhancements aim to reduce counterfeiting, improve traffic surveillance, and ensure that vehicles are easily trackable via smart traffic systems.
Implementation & Validity
The Sindh government has made it clear that only number plates issued by official Excise Department offices will be considered valid. Plates purchased from unauthorized sources such as street vendors or third-party sellers will not be accepted under any circumstances.
This decision supports efforts to standardize registration data, enhance public safety, and integrate surveillance with automated number plate recognition (ANPR) systems across the province.
While the initial rule applied to both two- and four-wheelers, the current extension only applies to two-wheelers—primarily motorcycles and scooters. Four-wheeler owners are still expected to comply with the original deadline.
