In a major step towards sustainable and inclusive transportation, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced the launch of the province’s first electric bus fleet. This initiative marks a transformative moment for public transport, especially in smaller districts that have long lacked reliable transport services.

In a public update via her official X (formerly Twitter) account, CM Maryam Nawaz stated that 1,100 electric buses are being manufactured in China, with the first batch of 240 buses set to arrive on August 22, 2025.

What Makes These Buses Special?

These are fully air-conditioned electric buses, designed with modern safety and accessibility features, including:

  • CCTV monitoring systems for onboard security
  • Built-in wheelchair ramps to ensure accessibility for people with disabilities
  • Eco-friendly electric engines to reduce carbon emissions
  • Affordable fare of just Rs. 20 to encourage widespread use

This initiative aligns with the provincial government’s broader goals of decarbonizing urban transportation and ensuring equitable access to mobility for all citizens, especially in regions that have never had a public transport system before.

Reaching the Underserved

The deployment plan focuses on smaller and underserved districts, marking a significant departure from previous urban-centered transport initiatives. By reaching areas traditionally excluded from such developments, this fleet aims to bridge mobility gaps and promote economic and social inclusion.

Environmental and Economic Impact

Besides easing daily commutes, the electric bus fleet is expected to significantly reduce air pollution and reliance on fossil fuels. With the government committing to a fare of Rs. 20, the service is not only eco-friendly but also economically sustainable for everyday passengers.

This large-scale rollout of electric buses positions Punjab at the forefront of green mobility solutions in Pakistan, setting a precedent for other provinces to follow.

Final Thoughts

The Punjab electric bus launch under the leadership of CM Maryam Nawaz is more than a transport upgrade—it’s a vision for a cleaner, more connected, and inclusive future. With the first 240 buses arriving this August and more to follow, millions stand to benefit from affordable, safe, and environmentally conscious public transport.
