The National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC) of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a fresh landslide alert for the northern mountainous regions of Pakistan, including Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJ&K). This advisory comes in response to forecasts of isolated and widespread heavy rainfall across several valleys and districts in the coming days.
Heavy Rainfall Predicted in Northern Pakistan
According to the NEOC, isolated heavy showers are expected in the valleys of Gilgit, Skardu, Hunza, Astore, Diamir, Ghanche, and Shigar. Meanwhile, widespread downpours have been predicted for Muzaffarabad, Neelum Valley, Rawalakot, Haveli, Bagh, and adjoining areas in AJ&K. These regions, known for their rugged terrain and steep slopes, are especially vulnerable to natural hazards during the monsoon season.
High-Risk Areas Identified for Landslides and Rockfalls
Specific locations highlighted as high-risk zones include Kohistan Lower (RD 180), Kolai Palas (RD 200), Nagar (RD 480), and Hunza (RD 500). Additionally, multiple sites in Rondu Valley, mapped under the Joint Slope Reconnaissance (JSR) program, are susceptible to landslides, mudslides, and rockfalls.
The NDMA has urged local authorities and residents to stay vigilant for signs of slope failure, sudden landslides, and ground subsidence. Past incidents have shown that even moderate rainfall can trigger large-scale landslides in these fragile regions, blocking roads and isolating entire communities.
Travel Advisory and Emergency Preparedness
Residents and tourists have been strongly advised to avoid unnecessary travel to these high-risk areas during the forecast period. The NDMA has directed all relevant provincial and district disaster management authorities to ensure that emergency personnel, heavy machinery, and rescue teams are deployed and remain on standby for a swift response in case of any untoward incident.
The NEOC also recommends that people living near steep slopes and riverbanks remain alert for signs of land movement, unusual ground cracks, or changes in water flow, which could indicate an imminent landslide.
With the monsoon season intensifying, the NDMA’s landslide alert is a critical reminder for communities in Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir to prioritize safety and preparedness. Tourists planning to visit northern Pakistan should stay updated with local weather advisories and road conditions, and delay trips if heavy rainfall persists.
Proactive measures, timely evacuations, and community awareness can significantly reduce risks and help protect lives and property during this vulnerable period.
