In a major push towards sustainable and inclusive development, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has announced the launch of 240 electric buses across 24 districts in South Punjab, prioritizing improved transport access for both urban and rural communities. This move marks a significant step in transforming Punjab’s public transport into a modern, eco-friendly system that serves people beyond major cities.

Equal Facilities for Villages and Cities

During a high-level meeting to review key transport projects, CM Maryam Nawaz emphasized that her administration will break the long-standing trend of focusing development only on big cities. “Villages deserve the same facilities as metropolitan areas,” she said, reiterating that every district in Punjab will hold equal importance under her governance model.

The first batch of electric buses will be deployed in underserved regions to provide reliable and affordable transport solutions. This initiative falls under the Punjab Clean Air Programme, which aims to fight urban pollution and modernize the province’s transit systems with environmentally friendly solutions.

Massive Electric Bus Expansion Planned

The government’s clean transport vision extends far beyond the initial rollout. As part of the broader plan:

  • 400 additional electric buses will be deployed in Lahore, Sheikhupura, Kasur, and Nankana Sahib to reduce emissions and improve air quality.
  • From August to October 2025, 500 more e-buses will launch in Lahore, Faisalabad, Bahawalpur, Multan, and Rawalpindi.
  • By the end of 2025, another 600 electric buses are expected to hit the roads, completing one of the largest green mobility expansions in Punjab’s history.

Data-Driven Route Planning

CM Maryam Nawaz has directed the Punjab Transport Department to fast-track all projects, using real-time data to finalize routes that align with public demand and daily commuting trends. This strategy aims to optimize routes, reduce travel times, and ensure maximum benefit to the people.

Major BRT Projects Also Underway

The provincial government is also pushing ahead with major Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) projects to complement the electric bus fleet:

Gujranwala BRT: A 22 km route from Rahwali to Aimanabad with 28 stations, supported by 80 feeder buses and four electric depots. Buses will run every eight minutes. A feasibility study is underway to extend the BRT to Gakhar Mandi.

Faisalabad Red and Orange Lines:

  • The Red Line will cover 23.4 km with 24 stations, connecting FIEDMC to Salami Chowk, serving over 185,000 passengers daily, and boosting industrial connectivity.
  • The Orange Line, stretching 29 km with 21 stations, aims to facilitate 111,000 daily commuters with modern, sustainable transport options.

These projects reflect the government’s commitment to making safe, clean, and modern mobility accessible to all—whether in a city or village.

A Greener, More Inclusive Future

Under Maryam Nawaz’s leadership, Punjab’s clean transport initiatives are gaining momentum. By deploying thousands of electric buses, expanding BRT lines, and ensuring rural areas are not left behind, the province is making strides toward greener cities, healthier air, and more inclusive mobility for every resident.

The government’s clear focus on equity, sustainability, and smart planning is transforming how Punjab moves—and sets a benchmark for other provinces to follow.
