Nawaz Sharif Flyover Opens to Traffic Ahead of Completion: Major Relief for Rawalpindi Commuters

Punjab Govt Pushes for Completion of Nawaz Sharif Flyover and GPO Underpass in Rawalpindi

Share

In a major push to improve urban mobility, the Punjab government has directed the Rawalpindi district administration to complete all remaining work on the service roads of the Nawaz Sharif Flyover and the GPO underpass on The Mall within one week. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance infrastructure and ease traffic congestion in the busy garrison city.

According to senior officials, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has been requested to inaugurate the fully completed infrastructure once the work concludes. The Nawaz Sharif Flyover is already open to traffic, offering relief to thousands of daily commuters. However, the adjoining service roads are in their final stages of completion and are expected to be ready by the end of this week.

GPO Underpass Nears Completion

Work on the GPO underpass, a crucial link on The Mall, is almost complete, with finishing touches and road carpeting currently underway. Officials confirmed that the carpeting work will be finalized within 2 to 3 days, ensuring a smoother driving experience and better traffic flow across the area.

Development Under ADP 2024–25

This infrastructure development is part of the Annual Development Programme (ADP) 2024–25, under which the Punjab government has initiated 155 development projects in Rawalpindi, with a combined worth of Rs. 49 billion.

Out of these:

  • 22 projects have been successfully completed
  • The remaining projects are in various stages of development and are expected to be finished on time

These projects aim to strengthen road connectivity, reduce congestion, and modernize urban infrastructure in one of the most traffic-prone cities of the province.

Urban Mobility Boost for Rawalpindi

The timely completion of the Nawaz Sharif Flyover service roads and the GPO underpass is expected to significantly enhance urban mobility, particularly for residents and businesses operating in and around The Mall, a key commercial artery in Rawalpindi. Improved infrastructure will not only reduce commute times but also stimulate economic activity in the region.

Local authorities take another one month to complete it.Maybe a year.
I saw in Lahore when government complete the metro bus service in record time 9 months. Here in Rawalpindi this flyover took at least 6 month to complete it.Yet whole of Adyala road still needs one year to complete as of pace of work.
