In a significant move to improve public transport and empower women, Karachi is set to introduce double-decker buses next month, following the successful model adopted by Punjab. This announcement was made by Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, who emphasized the government’s ongoing commitment to enhancing urban mobility and promoting gender-inclusive services.

Double-Decker Buses Coming to Karachi

Karachi, Pakistan’s largest metropolitan city, is preparing to roll out double-decker buses as part of a broader plan to modernize the public transport system. The initiative is aimed at easing congestion, providing affordable commuting options, and improving the overall travel experience in the city.

According to Minister Sharjeel Memon, these buses will not only offer a higher passenger capacity but will also introduce a more scenic and elevated commuting experience, ideal for both residents and tourists.

Pink Taxi and EV Scooties for Women

As part of a women empowerment agenda, the Sindh government is also planning to launch a ‘Pink Taxi Service’ exclusively for female commuters. In addition, Pink Electric Scooties are being distributed to women to enhance their mobility and independence.

The application process for these scooties is underway; however, progress is slow, primarily due to low license possession among women—only 140 female applicants currently hold valid motorcycle licenses. The government is encouraging more women to obtain licenses to benefit from these initiatives.

Traffic Safety: Strict Enforcement in Karachi

In parallel, Karachi Traffic Police have issued a renewed advisory to ensure safety on city roads. The rules are being strictly enforced and include:

  • Mandatory helmet use for motorcyclists
  • Seat belts for all car passengers
  • Adherence to speed limits and lane discipline
  • No wrong-way driving on one-way streets
  • Strict compliance with traffic signals and signage

Violations may lead to fines, vehicle impoundment, or other penalties, reinforcing the city’s commitment to road safety and responsible driving.

In August 2025, BYD outsold Tesla in the European Union for the second consecutive month, gaining a 1.3% market share against Tesla’s 1.2%. Strong demand for electrified vehicles and BYD’s flexible lineup helped it outpace Tesla’s all-electric-only strategy.
