Punjab’s Traffic Reform Revolution: A Bold Move for Safer Roads Under CM Maryam Nawaz

In a decisive move to improve road safety in Punjab, the provincial government has approved a tenfold increase in traffic fines, sending a strong message against reckless driving and traffic violations. The initiative, championed by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, is part of a comprehensive strategy to enhance traffic discipline and reduce accidents across the province.

During a recent high-level meeting, CM Maryam Nawaz emphasized the urgent need for traffic reforms, expressing concern over the lack of visible improvement in public road behavior. The new traffic fine policy in Punjab targets high-risk behaviors such as one-wheeling, over-speeding, and mobile phone use while driving, all of which will now attract harsher penalties and legal consequences, including FIRs.

In a groundbreaking step, the government will now hold parents and guardians accountable for underage driving, with criminal charges filed against those who permit minors to operate vehicles. This new rule aims to tackle the growing concern of teenage driving accidents and ensure responsible supervision.

The Punjab administration is also rolling out a comprehensive traffic infrastructure upgrade, with plans to redesign 372 traffic intersections province-wide—including 77 within Lahore. This effort will reduce congestion, streamline traffic flow, and enhance the overall commuter experience.

To promote transparency in traffic enforcement, all e-challans (traffic tickets) must now be supported with clear video or photographic evidence. Additionally, drivers found with non-functional headlights or caught using mobile phones will face significantly increased fines.

Taking a technology-driven approach to traffic management, the government will soon install digital roadside screens to notify drivers of upcoming traffic jams, allowing them to take alternate routes and avoid delays.

A major restructuring of the Punjab traffic police is also under consideration. The force will be divided into five specialized units, each with clearly defined responsibilities. Officers will receive upgraded uniforms and modern patrol equipment to boost efficiency and professionalism.

“We must act now,” declared CM Maryam Nawaz. “There’s still no visible improvement.” Her commitment underscores the administration’s resolve to implement meaningful reforms and make Punjab’s roads safer for everyone.

These sweeping reforms mark a new era of traffic safety in Punjab, combining stricter penalties, smarter infrastructure, and advanced technology to create a safer and more disciplined driving environment.
