Karachi-Sukkur Motorway: A Game-Changer for National Connectivity

Karachi-Sukkur Motorway: A Game-Changer for National Connectivity

Share

In an exciting development for Pakistan’s transportation sector, the Karachi Port to Sukkur Motorway is set to begin construction in 2025. Federal Minister for Communications, Aleem Khan, announced this significant project during a meeting in Islamabad, stating that the new motorway would provide a vital connection between the country’s north and south.

A Strategic Link for National Development

The Karachi-Sukkur Motorway will play a pivotal role in enhancing the transportation of commercial goods, boosting trade, and fostering economic development across the nation. The motorway’s construction will be undertaken as a Public-Private Partnership (PPP), with the government inviting the Sindh government to participate in the project. In case a partnership cannot be formed, the federal government will fund the entire construction process.

The completion of the Karachi-Sukkur Motorway will finalize the North-South Motorway network, a long-awaited infrastructural achievement for Pakistan. According to Aleem Khan, this project will not only improve connectivity but also generate an estimated Rs3,000 billion in profit for the government over the next 25 years.

Collaboration Between Sindh and Federal Governments

In a recent meeting, the Sindh government and the federal government reached an agreement to begin the motorway from Karachi to Sukkur, deviating from the previously planned Hyderabad to Sukkur route. The decision emphasizes the importance of collaboration between provincial and federal authorities, ensuring that the motorway aligns with national development goals.

The project will explore the potential for PPP or the formation of a consortium involving both the Sindh and federal governments. This collaborative approach is expected to streamline the construction process and foster shared benefits.

Fast-Tracking Development

The work on the Karachi-Sukkur Motorway is expected to commence in early 2025, with hopes of completing the project in the shortest time possible. Aleem Khan expressed his determination to ensure that the motorway is constructed efficiently, emphasizing that it will be a milestone for the nation’s growth.

Earlier discussions regarding the M6 Motorway route had involved both the Sindh and federal governments, with a strong focus on ensuring that the development progresses smoothly through a public-private partnership model. The project has gained support from various key stakeholders, including the Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah, NHA Chairman Shaharyar Sultan, and Director Hassan Shah, among others.

The Karachi-Sukkur Motorway is poised to become a transformative infrastructure project for Pakistan, connecting the country’s major ports and industrial hubs and accelerating the flow of goods between the north and south. With the federal and Sindh governments working together, this ambitious project promises to be a game-changer in the nation’s economic landscape.

This project is as usual riddled with corruption and a failure of Sindh Government what a shame.

Only plans for construction of national highway. Govt makes plan and throw it to dust bins. Govt planned before but practically NO further improvement. We are failed to construct 39 KM MALIR EXPRESSWAY in the last 4 years. How can we expect our beloved govt will construct Karachi to Sukkar National Highway?

Couldn’t agree more on it Adnan. Rightly summed up.

Lahore’s traffic authorities have proposed significant increases in traffic fines and annual token tax to reduce congestion and improve law enforcement. If approved, luxury and commercial vehicle fines will rise, and private vehicle owners will face higher annual taxes. These measures aim to promote public transport use and discipline reckless driving, marking a major shift in the city’s urban mobility strategy.
