Lahore is on the brink of a major public transportation upgrade with the upcoming launch of the Yellow Line Train Project, an ambitious initiative designed to ease urban congestion and provide a modern transit alternative for daily commuters. The project is a key part of the city’s evolving infrastructure and is expected to significantly improve connectivity along one of Lahore’s busiest corridors.
Project Overview and Timeline
The Yellow Line will extend over 24 kilometers, running from Jinnah Bus Terminal to Harbanspura via Canal Road, one of the city’s major arteries. The feasibility report for the project is nearing completion, and construction is scheduled to begin in September 2025, with a target completion date of June 2026.
The total project cost is estimated between Rs. 60 billion and Rs. 80 billion.
Advanced Transit System with Electric Trains
At the heart of the Yellow Line is an Automated Rapid Transit (ART) system that promises high efficiency and low emissions. The plan includes importing 30 state-of-the-art electric trains from China, which are already in operation in countries like China and the UAE. This makes the Yellow Line one of the most technologically advanced transit systems planned in Pakistan.
Smart Stations and High Daily Ridership
The Yellow Line will feature 18 modern smart stations, equipped with automated ticketing, real-time passenger information, and safety surveillance. The system is projected to handle around 130,000 passengers daily, offering a reliable, fast, and eco-friendly alternative to road-based transportation.
Government Backing and Pending Approvals
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has officially endorsed the project, signaling strong political will to move forward. However, final approvals from the Punjab Cabinet and the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) are still awaited. Once cleared, the Yellow Line will be formally included in the provincial development portfolio for the upcoming fiscal year.
A Step Toward Sustainable Urban Mobility
As Lahore continues to grapple with traffic congestion and rising pollution levels, the Yellow Line represents a forward-thinking solution. It aligns with broader goals of sustainable development, clean energy adoption, and smart urban planning.
