The Municipal Corporation Rawalpindi (MCR) has officially launched work on a dedicated walking street stretching from Fowara Chowk to Dingi Khoi in the city’s bustling Raja Bazaar. Modeled after the successful Saddar Cantonment project, the initiative aims to improve pedestrian safety, enhance shopping facilities, and reduce traffic congestion in one of Rawalpindi’s busiest commercial areas.

Project Details and Investment

According to Municipal Officer Infrastructure (MOI) Rafaqat Gondal, the project carries a cost of Rs. 250 million and is expected to be completed within six months. The development will include:

  • Shifting of electricity, PTCL, and SNGPL lines underground
  • Improved civic infrastructure and modernized marketplace layout
  • Safer walkways and enhanced facilities for families and shoppers

Safer and More Accessible Shopping Experience

Gondal explained that the project will make shopping easier for families while providing a safe pedestrian environment in the city’s busiest hub. With reduced traffic hazards and a cleaner, organized layout, the walking street is expected to create a family-friendly environment that encourages longer visits and extended shopping hours.

Boosting Commercial Activity

The Saddar walking street project has already proven successful in attracting more shoppers, reducing congestion, and boosting local businesses. Authorities believe that Raja Bazaar’s walking street will replicate this success by creating a vibrant commercial hub that benefits both shopkeepers and consumers.

Part of Rawalpindi’s Beautification Drive

The initiative is also a key element of MCR’s city beautification campaign, which focuses on enhancing Rawalpindi’s infrastructure and providing citizens with improved civic amenities. Gondal emphasized that such development projects are crucial for transforming the city’s environment while addressing long-standing urban challenges.
