The city of Rawalpindi is poised for a major traffic infrastructure upgrade with the construction of two new underpasses and a flyover, aiming to address long-standing congestion issues across key intersections. As part of the Punjab government’s 2025–26 Annual Development Programme, these high-impact projects are expected to improve urban mobility, support local business growth, and reduce vehicle emissions.

The proposed projects include:

  • An underpass at Chandni Chowk, linking Rawal Road to Murree Road
  • A second underpass at Marrir Chowk, designed to streamline a critical traffic junction
  • A 1-kilometre flyover from Siddique Chowk to IJ Principal Road, providing signal-free access

The Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) has been tasked with conducting detailed feasibility studies and preparing engineering designs. A budget of Rs. 40 million has been allocated for each of the three projects. These initiatives are being backed by key parliamentarians, including Federal Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi (NA-56) and Danyal Chaudhry (NA-57).

An official from the Housing and Urban Development Department stated that these new underpasses and flyover are designed to eliminate choke points, reduce commute times, and improve road safety. The Chandni Chowk underpass will feature a single-barrel layout, while the Marrir Chowk underpass will ease traffic flow at one of Rawalpindi’s most congested intersections.

Construction is scheduled to begin after the completion of ongoing projects at The Mall and Adiala Road. Additionally, feasibility work has already started for a potential underpass or flyover at Kutcheri Chowk, signaling a broader push toward sustainable traffic planning in Rawalpindi.

These strategic infrastructure upgrades not only promise smoother traffic flow but also align with the city’s goals for a cleaner, greener, and more efficient urban transport system.
