Punjab Launches Mega Road Project to Upgrade 12,000 KM of Roads

Share

In a landmark move for infrastructure development in Pakistan, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has approved the Mega Road Project, the largest road construction initiative in the province’s history. The project aims to upgrade and restore 12,000 kilometres of roads across Punjab, significantly improving regional connectivity, transportation efficiency, and economic development.

During a high-level session with the Punjab Communication and Works Department, Maryam Nawaz emphasized aligning road projects with public demand and traffic flow patterns to ensure optimal impact. The Chief Minister also directed officials to enforce anti-encroachment by-laws to enhance road safety and traffic mobility across both urban and rural areas.

Southern Loop of Lahore Ring Road Under Review

A major focus of the meeting was the Southern Loop of the Lahore Ring Road, an 18.5-kilometre section designed to reduce traffic congestion and improve commute times in the provincial capital. The project is a crucial part of Punjab’s broader plan to modernize its transport infrastructure.

Connectivity for Underserved Regions

To promote inclusive development, feasibility studies were approved for a new expressway that would connect Layyah-Bhakkar Road to the motorway, potentially unlocking access for underdeveloped areas. This move reflects the government’s commitment to equitable infrastructure growth across Punjab.

Uniform Urban-Rural Development Standards

In a step toward aesthetic consistency, the Chief Minister proposed implementing standardized tuff tile patterns for pavements in both cities and villages. “Infrastructure should reflect dignity and uniformity, whether in metropolitan Lahore or a rural village,” she said.

460 Road Schemes in Progress

According to officials, 460 road construction projects are currently underway throughout Punjab. Completed segments include the Quaid-e-Azam Interchange to Wagah Border corridor, a key trade and transit route. Additional projects receiving funding and development support include the dualization of the Multan-Vehari Road, recently approved by ECNEC, and ongoing work on the Muridke-Narowal Road.

Minimum Road Width Mandate and Future Roadmap

Maryam Nawaz endorsed a proposal to set a minimum road width of 12 feet, ensuring safer and more efficient travel across the province. She confirmed that both inter-district and inter-village roads will be included in the next fiscal year’s infrastructure development portfolio.

Economic and Social Impact of the Mega Road Project

The Mega Road Project in Punjab is expected to be a catalyst for economic growth, supporting access to markets, education, healthcare, and employment opportunities. The road upgrades will benefit agriculture, trade, and mobility, especially in regions previously underserved by major infrastructure projects.

Government Commitment to Safety and Innovation

Separately, on the occasion of World Day for Safety and Health at Work, Maryam Nawaz reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to worker safety. She emphasized the integration of artificial intelligence and digital technologies to meet international standards for occupational health and safety.

“This project is more than a road plan—it’s a vision for a stronger, more connected, and inclusive Punjab,” said Maryam Nawaz. “We are investing in the infrastructure of opportunity.”

I think time has come that road businesses should be defined, and only those business should be allowed on both sides of roads, no residential door should be opened on roads, factory gates should be turned on 90 degree, every factory should spare some space for parking, also all by laws should of highways should be implemented,
