In a groundbreaking move towards sustainable urban transport, the Punjab Transport Department has announced the introduction of 86 electric buses under the first phase of its eco-friendly initiative. Dr. Ahmad Javid Qazi, Secretary of Punjab Transport, revealed this during his recent visit to Faisalabad, where he assessed the city’s transport needs and officially launched intra-city electric bus services.
Details of the Initiative
The project includes the deployment of:
- 50 nine-meter electric buses
- 36 eleven-meter electric buses
These buses will operate on six designated routes and have been approved and funded by the Punjab Cabinet. The integration of these electric buses with the existing metro bus service aims to provide a seamless and modern transport solution for urban commuters.
Supporting Infrastructure
To ensure smooth operations, the Punjab government is setting up new depots at key locations, including:
- Ghulam Muhammadabad
- Sargodha Road
- Gatwala
These depots will serve as hubs for maintenance and charging facilities, supporting the electric bus fleet’s efficiency and reliability.
Benefits of Electric Buses
The introduction of electric buses is a significant step in modernizing Punjab’s public transport system and promoting sustainability. Key benefits of the initiative include:
- Environmental Impact: Reduced carbon footprint and improved air quality by minimizing vehicular emissions.
- Enhanced Commuter Experience: Reliable and efficient travel options for urban commuters.
- Urban Development: Improved transport infrastructure to meet the growing needs of cities like Faisalabad.
A Vision for the Future
Dr. Ahmad Javid Qazi emphasized the importance of coordinated planning and collaboration with relevant departments to ensure the project’s success. The initiative reflects Punjab’s commitment to adopting modern and eco-friendly solutions to address urban transport challenges while promoting environmental sustainability.
As Punjab steps into the era of electric mobility, this project marks a significant milestone in the province’s journey toward a cleaner, greener, and more efficient public transport system.
