Lahore Unveils Route 47: Pakistan’s First Electricity-Generating Smart Road

Lahore is stepping into the future with the launch of Route 47, the country’s first electricity-producing smart road, located right in the heart of the city. Spanning 4.5 kilometers, Route 47 connects key traffic-heavy zones including Kalma Chowk, Ferozepur Road, Gulberg, Walton Road, and the Lahore Ring Road, offering a futuristic solution to the city’s growing urban traffic challenges.

Constructed by the Punjab Central Business District Development Authority (CBD Punjab) at an estimated cost of Rs. 9 billion (around USD 32 million), Route 47 is being hailed as Pakistan’s most advanced road to date—and for good reason.

What Makes Route 47 Unique?

Unlike conventional roads, Route 47 is designed with sustainability, mobility, and smart infrastructure in mind:

  • A dedicated flyover ensures smooth vehicular movement and reduces congestion.
  • Separate pedestrian and cycling lanes promote eco-friendly commuting and ensure safety for non-motorized travelers.
  • An advanced drainage system prevents urban flooding during Lahore’s heavy rains.
  • Most notably, solar panel-fitted sidewalks not only provide shade but also generate up to one megawatt of electricity—enough to power a small neighborhood.

This innovative road passes through the old Walton Airport area, which is undergoing a major transformation into the Lahore Central Business District (CBD). Designed to foster economic growth and urban innovation, this district is being equipped with high-rise buildings, office complexes, shopping areas, and smart infrastructure.

A Vision for a Smarter Lahore

The redevelopment plan includes new sewage systems, a modern rainwater drainage setup, two multi-level parking plazas, and an artificial lake to store rainwater. These developments point to a future where Lahore grows upward instead of outward, reducing sprawl while boosting technological and economic activity.

According to CBD Punjab officials, most of the construction is already nearing completion, with Route 47 acting as a flagship initiative for upcoming smart city projects in Pakistan.
