In a landmark announcement, Sindh Energy Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah revealed that the provincial government will install 100 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in Karachi. This initiative is part of Sindh’s broader clean energy agenda and supports the National Electric Vehicle (NEV) Policy 2025–30 recently unveiled by the federal government.

Speaking at the Sindh Assembly’s budget session, Minister Shah emphasized the importance of clean and affordable transportation. He also confirmed that legislation is being drafted to regulate and support EV infrastructure development in Sindh, ensuring a smoother transition to electric mobility.

Supporting Pakistan’s National EV Policy 2025–30

The announcement comes shortly after the federal launch of the National Electric Vehicle Policy 2025–30 by Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Industries and Production Haroon Akhtar Khan. During a joint press briefing with Secretary Industries Saif Anjum and EDB CEO Engr. Khuda Bukhsh, Khan highlighted that the transport sector is one of the biggest contributors to carbon emissions in Pakistan.

By promoting EV adoption and expanding infrastructure, the policy aims to significantly reduce fossil fuel dependency and urban air pollution. Khan emphasized that affordable and clean transport solutions are vital to achieving environmental and economic sustainability.

Karachi at the Forefront of Green Mobility

With the upcoming installation of EV charging stations in Karachi, Sindh is taking a leadership role in Pakistan’s green mobility transformation. The city, known for its traffic congestion and pollution, will benefit greatly from this shift toward electric vehicles.

The EV charging stations will not only encourage private EV ownership but also attract investment in the local green economy. This aligns with global trends, where urban centers are increasingly adopting EV infrastructure to combat climate change.

Governance and Financial Challenges

Despite these positive developments, Minister Shah raised concerns about the federal allocation of funds. He claimed that funds designated for Sindh—particularly for Karachi—are often diverted to other regions, hindering local development. Nevertheless, the provincial government remains committed to autonomous local governance and sustainable urban planning.

The installation of 100 EV charging stations in Karachi marks a significant step toward a cleaner, greener future for Pakistan. Backed by both provincial action and federal policy, the move is expected to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles and help the country meet its climate targets.

With the NEV Policy 2025–30 providing national direction, and Sindh taking proactive measures, Pakistan is on the road to a more sustainable and energy-efficient transportation system.
