In a significant step toward eco-friendly urban transport, the Punjab government has announced the introduction of 102 electric buses in Rawalpindi. The initiative, with an estimated cost of Rs. 7 billion, aims to reduce pollution and modernize the city’s public transportation system.

Cleaner Public Transport for Rawalpindi

The electric buses will operate on an 84-kilometer route, covering 10 key public transport routes, including major areas such as Taxila, Wah Cantt, IJP Road, Octori 26, and Daultala. The buses are expected to provide an efficient and environmentally friendly commuting option while significantly improving air quality by reducing vehicular emissions.

Financial Allocation and Future Expansion

The provincial government has allocated Rs. 4.7 billion for the project, which is set to commence next year. In an August expansion, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz approved increasing the fleet to 200 electric buses, enhancing the project’s scope. The expansion follows agreements made during Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s visit to China, emphasizing sustainable transportation across Pakistan, including Islamabad and other provinces.

Modern Infrastructure and Services

To support the electric bus fleet, the project includes the construction of state-of-the-art terminals. A 100-bus capacity terminal will be built at the old GTS bus depot in Chohard Choke, while another terminal will be constructed at Adamjee Road in Rawalpindi Cantonment. Furthermore, 40 electric chargers will be installed at these terminals to ensure seamless operations.

Passengers can expect international-standard services, offering a comfortable and reliable travel experience. The electric buses will cater to the growing transportation needs of both Rawalpindi and its cantonment areas, bridging important routes while prioritizing environmental sustainability.

A Sustainable Future for Public Transport

Punjab’s Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan expressed optimism about the project, stating that the e-bus service marks a transformative step in addressing pollution and modernizing public transport in the region. With Rawalpindi at the forefront of this green initiative, the project is expected to serve as a model for eco-friendly transportation in other cities of Pakistan.

The electric bus service is more than just a transportation upgrade; it’s a stride toward a sustainable future, offering Rawalpindi residents a cleaner, greener way to commute.
