BMW has announced a recall of more than 720,000 vehicles due to a potential fire hazard caused by a defect in the electric water pump’s connector. This recall, which affects 12 models manufactured between 2012 and 2018, is being conducted in coordination with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The defect, if left unaddressed, could lead to a short circuit and potentially cause a fire, although such incidents are considered rare.

The Issue: Water Pump Connector Defect

The recall centers around an inaccurately encased electrical connector on the water pump, which could be exposed to water. This exposure increases the risk of a short circuit, which in turn, poses a fire hazard. The NHTSA highlighted this issue in a document, stating that while the likelihood of a fire is low, the risk remains significant enough to warrant the recall.

Global Impact: Thermal Events and Investigations

BMW became aware of the defect after being contacted by the Korean Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport, which reported a thermal incident in January 2024 involving a vehicle in the United States. Although the specific details of the incident were not disclosed, this prompted BMW to investigate further. The automaker has identified 18 thermal events globally but has not been alerted to any accidents or injuries related to the defect.

Affected Models and Years

The NHTSA has listed the 11 BMW models affected by this recall under recall number 24V-608. The following vehicles are included:

Resolution: Inspection and Repairs

BMW has announced that the method for addressing this defect is straightforward. BMW dealers will inspect the water pump connectors and plugs, and if any damage is detected, they will replace the components free of charge. Additionally, a shield will be installed to prevent fluids from coming into contact with the plug, thereby reducing the risk of a short circuit.

What BMW Owners Need to Know

BMW owners of the affected models are encouraged to contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or the NHTSA vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 for further information. BMW will begin notifying affected drivers starting October 4, 2024.
