Pakistan Railways has introduced a newly upgraded 20-coach Karakoram Express, offering improved travel facilities and a more comfortable journey for passengers travelling between Lahore and Karachi. The upgraded train aims to enhance the passenger experience through modern onboard amenities, multiple travel classes, and private-sector management.
The newly refurbished Karakoram Express was officially inaugurated at Lahore Railway Station by Pakistan Railways Chief Executive Officer Muhammad Hafeezullah. The development is part of Pakistan Railways’ ongoing efforts to improve service standards, modernise passenger facilities, and introduce better management practices across its operations.
Karakoram Express Features Four Travel Classes
The upgraded 20-coach Karakoram Express offers four different travel classes to accommodate passengers with varying budgets and travel preferences. These include:
- AC Sleeper: Designed for passengers seeking a more comfortable overnight journey.
- AC Business: Offers premium travel facilities and additional services.
- AC Standard: Provides an air-conditioned travel experience at a comparatively affordable price.
- Economy Class: A budget-friendly option for passengers travelling between the two major cities.
The train will operate under a private-sector arrangement, with its commercial management handed over to a private operator. This initiative is intended to improve operational efficiency, passenger services, and overall service quality.
Karakoram Express Timings and Route
The Karakoram Express will operate daily between Lahore and Karachi, departing from both cities at 3:00 PM.
The train will cover the journey in approximately 19 hours, providing an important rail connection between Punjab and Sindh.
During its journey, the train will stop at the following railway stations:
- Raiwind
- Sahiwal
- Khanewal
- Bahawalpur
- Rohri
- Nawabshah
- Hyderabad

- Drigh Road
With these stops, the upgraded Karakoram Express will serve passengers from several important cities and railway stations along the Lahore-Karachi route.
Modern Facilities for Passengers
One of the major highlights of the upgraded Karakoram Express is the introduction of improved onboard facilities designed to make long-distance rail travel more convenient.
Passengers will receive several services during their journey, including:
- Complimentary mineral water
- Freshly prepared meals
- Bedding facilities
- Mobile charging points
- Wi-Fi connectivity
- Onboard infotainment system
Additionally, passengers travelling in AC Sleeper and AC Business classes will receive special complimentary services, offering an enhanced travel experience for those choosing premium accommodation.
Private-Sector Management to Improve Pakistan Railways Services
The handover of the Karakoram Express’s commercial management to the private sector reflects Pakistan Railways’ strategy to improve passenger services through private-sector participation.
Long-distance train services in Pakistan have significant potential, particularly on busy routes connecting major commercial centres such as Lahore and Karachi. Improved facilities, better management, and reliable operations can help attract more passengers towards railway travel.
The upgraded Karakoram Express is expected to provide passengers with a more comfortable alternative for travelling between the two cities while supporting Pakistan Railways’ broader modernisation efforts.
With its 20 coaches, four travel classes, daily departures, and modern onboard amenities, the train represents another step towards improving intercity rail travel in Pakistan.
