Karachi is taking another major step toward becoming a smarter and more efficient city by introducing computerized traffic signals and digital fare meters in rickshaws. The initiative, announced by Commissioner Karachi Syed Hassan Naqvi, is designed to improve traffic management, reduce congestion, increase road safety, and make public transportation more transparent and passenger-friendly.
The announcement came during a meeting of the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) Board, chaired by Commissioner Hassan Naqvi, where officials discussed several measures aimed at modernizing Karachi’s transport network and addressing long-standing traffic challenges.
Computerized Traffic Signals to Ease Congestion
According to the commissioner, the first phase of the computerized traffic signal project will cover some of Karachi’s busiest intersections, including:
- PIDC
- Sindh Club (Metro Hotel)
- Avari Towers
These locations experience heavy traffic throughout the day, making them ideal for the city’s first intelligent traffic management system.
The second phase of the project will expand to:
- Teen Talwar
- Boat Basin
Unlike conventional traffic lights that operate on fixed timers, computerized traffic signals can better manage changing traffic volumes. Authorities expect the system to adjust traffic flow more efficiently during peak hours, reducing unnecessary waiting times and improving vehicle movement on major roads.
Restoration of Damaged Traffic Signals Near Completion
During the meeting, officials also reviewed progress on restoring damaged traffic signals across Karachi.
Commissioner Hassan Naqvi informed the RTA Board that 12 out of 16 non-functional traffic signals have already been restored, while repair work on the remaining four signals is currently underway.
Restoring these signals is expected to significantly improve traffic regulation, reduce accidents caused by malfunctioning intersections, and strengthen overall road safety throughout the city.
Digital Fare Meters Coming to Rickshaws
One of the most significant announcements was the decision to introduce digital fare meters in rickshaws.
The move aims to eliminate frequent complaints from commuters regarding overcharging and arbitrary fare demands. Under the proposed digital system, passengers will pay fares based on the actual distance traveled instead of negotiating prices with drivers before each trip.
Officials believe the digital fare meter system will:
- Ensure transparent fare calculations
- Reduce fare disputes between passengers and drivers
- Build greater trust in public transport
- Standardize rickshaw fares across Karachi
For daily commuters, the initiative could make traveling by rickshaw more predictable and affordable.
New Bus Routes to Improve Public Transport
The commissioner also directed transport authorities to develop new bus routes based on public demand rather than simply extending existing services.
Special priority will be given to suburban and underserved areas where residents currently have limited access to reliable public transport.
Officials have been instructed to focus on creating routes that improve connectivity and better serve citizens’ transportation needs, making commuting easier across different parts of Karachi.
AI-Based Traffic Enforcement Expansion Underway
The latest initiatives complement Karachi’s broader smart traffic management strategy.
Earlier, DIG Traffic Pir Muhammad Shah announced plans to expand the city’s AI-powered traffic enforcement system to Airport Road, Clifton, and the Do Talwar and Teen Talwar intersections by August 2026.
The pilot project is currently operating on Shahrah-e-Faisal, where 20 high-resolution Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras monitor traffic around the clock up to Drigh Road. The AI-based system is designed to detect lane violations, improve law enforcement, and encourage safer driving behavior.
Karachi Moving Toward Smarter Urban Mobility
The introduction of computerized traffic signals, digital rickshaw fare meters, improved bus route planning, and AI-based traffic monitoring reflects Karachi’s ongoing efforts to modernize its transportation infrastructure.
If implemented successfully, these initiatives could significantly reduce traffic congestion, improve road safety, enhance commuter convenience, and create a more efficient public transport system for millions of residents.
