BYD Pakistan Set to Begin Local EV Production at $150 Million Gharo Assembly Plant

Pakistan’s electric vehicle (EV) industry is preparing for a major milestone as Chinese automotive giant BYD moves closer to launching local vehicle production at its state-of-the-art $150 million assembly plant in Gharo, Sindh. The facility, currently in the final stages of equipment installation and commissioning, is expected to begin rolling out locally assembled vehicles in the near future.

The development marks one of the fastest automotive manufacturing projects of its scale in Pakistan and highlights the country’s growing importance in the regional electric mobility sector.

BYD Gharo Plant to Produce 25,000 Vehicles Annually

Once fully operational, the Gharo assembly facility will have the capacity to assemble approximately 25,000 vehicles annually. The company has confirmed that its first locally assembled BYD vehicle will roll off the production line as soon as commissioning is completed.

Local manufacturing is expected to significantly strengthen BYD’s presence in Pakistan while helping improve vehicle availability, reduce delivery times, and support the country’s transition toward cleaner transportation.

Industry analysts believe the project could also contribute to job creation, technology transfer, and the development of Pakistan’s automotive supply chain as the EV market continues to expand.

Record Shipment Supports Market Before Local Production

Ahead of the plant’s launch, BYD Pakistan recently received its largest-ever shipment of more than 2,000 new energy vehicles (NEVs) through a roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) vessel.

The imported vehicles will help maintain dealership inventory and ensure timely customer deliveries until production at the Gharo facility officially begins. This move demonstrates the company’s confidence in the growing demand for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles across Pakistan.

Lower Running Costs Expected to Drive EV Adoption

BYD says its advanced proprietary EV technology can reduce vehicle running costs by up to 75% compared to conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. Lower fuel and maintenance costs remain among the biggest advantages of electric mobility, making EVs increasingly attractive for Pakistani consumers amid fluctuating fuel prices.

As awareness of electric transportation grows, affordable operating costs are expected to play a key role in accelerating EV adoption across both personal and commercial vehicle segments.

Nationwide Fast-Charging Network Expands

To complement its manufacturing investment, HUBCO Green Private Limited (HGL), in collaboration with BYD Pakistan, has developed a network of 19 public DC fast-charging stations spanning a 1,300-kilometer corridor between Karachi and Peshawar.

The charging infrastructure addresses one of the biggest concerns among prospective EV buyers—charging accessibility—and supports long-distance electric travel across Pakistan’s major highway network.

The expansion of fast-charging stations is expected to encourage greater consumer confidence while laying the foundation for a broader nationwide EV ecosystem.

A Major Boost for Pakistan’s EV Industry

The commencement of local production at BYD’s Gharo facility represents a significant milestone for Pakistan’s automotive sector. Combined with expanding charging infrastructure, increased vehicle availability, and lower ownership costs, the investment is expected to accelerate the country’s transition toward sustainable mobility.

As Pakistan continues to promote cleaner transportation solutions and attract international automotive investment, BYD’s local manufacturing initiative positions the company as one of the leading players shaping the future of electric vehicles in the country.
