By Karachi’s busy University Road has become a major safety concern for commuters as ongoing construction work on the Red Line Bus Rapid Transit project continues to disrupt daily travel. Residents and motorists say prolonged delays and poor safety measures have transformed one of the city’s main roads into a hazardous route.
The Red Line BRT project, designed to improve public transport in Karachi, has remained under construction for more than four and a half years. The corridor stretches from Malir Halt to Numaish Chowrangi and serves thousands of commuters each day. However, incomplete work and damaged road conditions have created serious risks for drivers and pedestrians.
Large open pits, broken surfaces, and stagnant sewage water now dominate several sections of the road. Many of these hazards remain uncovered or poorly marked, making them difficult to detect, especially at night or during rainy conditions.
Accidents and traffic problems raise public concern
Commuters report dangerous conditions along multiple stretches, particularly between Hasan Square and Jail Chowrangi. Rainwater mixed with sewage has filled deep construction holes, turning them into hidden traps for vehicles.
According to reports, two auto rickshaws fell into the same water filled crater within minutes, forcing nearby residents to rescue passengers. In another incident, a motorcyclist lost control after hitting a ditch and suffered injuries. Such accidents have increased fears among daily travelers who rely on the road for work and education.
Travel time has also increased significantly. Routes that once required only minutes now take hours due to diversions, traffic congestion, and narrowed lanes. Drivers face constant delays, while public transport operators struggle to maintain schedules.
Residents say authorities have responded slowly despite repeated complaints. Many believe stronger safety measures should have been implemented during construction to prevent accidents and reduce risks.
The Red Line BRT project was initially promoted as a flagship initiative aimed at modernizing Karachi’s transport system. Once completed, it is expected to provide efficient and environmentally friendly public transport across the city. However, continued delays have raised concerns about project management and planning.

For many Karachi residents, daily travel has turned into a stressful and risky experience while they wait for the promised benefits of the Red Line project.
