In a significant move to modernize public transportation and promote environmental sustainability, authorities have decided to launch an electric bus service in Multan Division. The initiative aims to provide residents with a safe, modern, and eco-friendly public transport system, reducing reliance on fuel-powered vehicles and cutting harmful emissions across the region.
Before the buses begin operations, the government will construct modern bus shelters throughout Multan Division to ensure passenger comfort and accessibility. According to official sources, a total of 114 electric buses will operate across the division, supported by 470 newly built bus shelters, marking one of the largest public transport upgrades in southern Punjab.
Phased Launch Plan in Multan City
The electric bus service will be introduced in phases to ensure smooth implementation.
In the first phase, authorities will deploy 45 electric buses on three major routes in Multan City, offering residents an immediate improvement in urban mobility.
During the second phase, 24 additional electric buses will be added on five more routes, further expanding coverage and reducing travel congestion in busy areas.
The government has already completed the tendering process for 49 bus shelters in Multan City and 87 shelters in the Saddar area, signaling rapid progress toward operational readiness.
Expansion Across Other Districts
The project extends beyond Multan City to cover other districts within the division:
- Khanewal: 15 electric buses supported by 136 bus shelters
- Vehari: 10 electric buses with 64 shelters
- Lodhran: 15 electric buses and 134 bus shelters, where the tendering process is currently underway
This regional expansion ensures that modern public transport benefits are evenly distributed across the division rather than being limited to urban centers.
Focus on Quality and Transparency
Multan Division Commissioner Aamir Kareem Khan has directed all concerned departments to maintain high construction standards, transparency in processes, and timely completion of bus shelters before the official launch of the electric bus service. Authorities believe these measures will ensure long-term reliability and public trust in the project.
Once operational, the electric bus service is expected to reduce air pollution, lower fuel costs, and improve daily commuting, setting a strong example for sustainable urban transport in Pakistan.
