By Ford is reportedly in talks with Chinese auto giant BYD to use its advanced batteries in upcoming hybrid vehicles. The move comes as Ford shifts focus from fully electric cars to hybrids due to cooling EV demand.
According to international media reports, the American automaker is exploring a partnership with BYD to source lithium-ion battery packs. These batteries could be used in Ford’s hybrids and plug-in hybrid models made outside the United States.
Why Ford Is Turning to BYD
BYD is not only the world’s largest electric car maker, but also one of the biggest battery producers. The company already supplies batteries to Tesla, Toyota, Mercedes-Benz, and Stellantis in different markets.
Ford sees BYD’s lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) batteries as a cost-effective and reliable option. These batteries are known for safety, long life, and lower production cost. This makes them ideal for hybrid and extended-range vehicles.
Shift From EVs to Hybrids
Over the past year, Ford slowed down its electric vehicle expansion plans. The company ended production of the F-150 Lightning and delayed some EV projects. In contrast, its hybrid models such as the Maverick and F-150 Hybrid performed strongly in 2025.
Because of this, Ford is now prioritizing hybrids and extended-range electric vehicles. Partnering with BYD could help Ford reduce costs and speed up development.
What the Partnership Could Look Like
Reports suggest Ford may import BYD batteries for vehicles built in Europe and other regions. China-made batteries face heavy tariffs in the US, so the deal may focus on overseas production.
Ford is also planning a plug-in hybrid Bronco in Spain for 2027. Analysts believe this model could be one of the first to use BYD battery technology.
This is not Ford’s first collaboration with a Chinese company. The automaker already works with CATL for battery technology in its Michigan plant. Ford has also used BYD batteries in some models sold in China through joint ventures.
