Traffic has resumed on the M-2 Motorway, connecting Lahore and Islamabad, after heavy fog lifted and visibility improved, officials from the National Highway and Motorway Police (NHMP) confirmed on Wednesday. The reopening has brought relief to commuters after hours of disruption caused by dense winter fog that blanketed large parts of Punjab.
Earlier in the day, the motorway was temporarily closed when visibility dropped to extremely low levels, creating hazardous driving conditions and increasing the risk of serious road accidents. Such closures are common during the winter season, as thick fog frequently affects major highways and motorways, particularly during nighttime and early morning hours.
Winter Fog Disrupts Travel Across Punjab
With the onset of winter, fog has become a recurring challenge for road users across Punjab. The NHMP routinely shuts down major motorways, including the M-2, to protect commuters when visibility falls to unsafe levels. Officials stress that these precautionary closures are necessary to prevent multi-vehicle collisions and fatal accidents caused by sudden visibility loss.
Although the M-2 Motorway is currently open to traffic, authorities have cautioned that fog is likely to return, especially during late-night and early-morning hours. As weather patterns remain unpredictable, further closures or traffic restrictions may be imposed at short notice if conditions worsen.
Safety Advisory for Motorists
The National Highway and Motorway Police have issued a renewed safety advisory, urging motorists to exercise extra caution when traveling during foggy conditions. Drivers are advised to:
- Reduce speed and avoid aggressive driving
- Use fog lights and low-beam headlights only
- Maintain a safe following distance from other vehicles
- Avoid sudden lane changes or harsh braking
- Check official travel advisories before starting their journey
Officials emphasize that drivers should never rely solely on vehicle headlights during dense fog and must remain alert at all times.
Stay Updated Before Traveling
Travelers planning to use the M-2 Motorway or other major routes are strongly advised to monitor weather updates and NHMP advisories through official channels. Timely information can help motorists avoid unnecessary delays and ensure safer journeys during the fog-prone winter season.
Authorities reiterate that public safety remains the top priority, and restrictions will continue to be enforced whenever visibility drops below safe limits.
