Rawalpindi Introduces High-Tech Traffic Enforcement with Drones and Over 2,000 Cameras

Rawalpindi has taken a major step toward modernizing traffic management by launching an intensive, technology-powered enforcement initiative targeting the city’s busiest and most congested routes. According to The Express Tribune, Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Farhan Aslam confirmed that the traffic police are now using drones and an expanded surveillance network to detect and respond to violations in real time.

This new system is designed to support traffic wardens with instant monitoring capabilities, enabling them to take swift action against offenders. CTO Aslam highlighted that the administration has adopted a zero-tolerance policy for some of the most dangerous and frequent violations in the city. These include:

  • Underage driving
  • Riding motorcycles without helmets
  • Violating one-way traffic rules

CTO Aslam emphasized that the primary mission of the traffic police is far beyond issuing challans. “The purpose is not merely to issue fines, but to save lives,” he stated, underscoring the need to promote safer driving habits through strict and smart enforcement.

As of November 22, over 2,000 surveillance cameras have been installed across 359 key locations in Rawalpindi. An additional 15 cameras have been placed at the city’s main entry and exit points to closely monitor vehicle movement and identify potential violations. This extensive network works continuously to track traffic flow, document infractions, and support the city’s safety objectives.

The crackdown focuses especially on life-threatening violations, including using a mobile phone while driving, failing to wear a seatbelt, and riding motorbikes without a helmet — all of which have been linked to major road accidents in the city.

Rawalpindi’s tech-driven enforcement initiative marks a significant shift toward smarter, safer, and more efficient traffic management. With real-time monitoring and uncompromising action, authorities aim to reduce accidents, protect citizens, and create a more disciplined road culture throughout the city.
