Sindh Govt to Launch Double-Decker and Electric Buses in Karachi Next Week

The Sindh government has confirmed that double-decker buses and new electric buses (EV buses) will officially begin operations in Karachi next week. This major upgrade to the city’s public transport system is part of a broader initiative to modernize urban mobility and expand the People’s Bus Service across Sindh.

During a high-level meeting chaired by Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, key transport officials—including Transport Secretary Asad Zaman, SMTMA Managing Director Kanwal Nizam Bhutto, TransKarachi CEO Fawad Ghaffar Soomro, and Yellow Line BRT PD Zamir Abbasi—briefed the minister on the progress of several major mass-transit projects. These included updates on the Yellow Line BRT and Red Line BRT, two vital corridors that aim to reshape Karachi’s transport landscape.

Sharjeel Inam Memon announced that the newly procured double-decker and electric buses will arrive next week, with new routes under the People’s Bus Service being finalized for Karachi and other districts of Sindh. The government aims to substantially expand the service network this year, improving commute options for millions of residents.

He further confirmed that the EV taxi service—an eco-friendly transport alternative—is expected to be launched by December. Additionally, the Sindh government plans to introduce 500 more buses during the current financial year to strengthen the province’s transport infrastructure.

The meeting also highlighted the second phase of the Pink Scooties Scheme, designed to empower women through safe and independent mobility. Training programs for women and female students will be launched across all divisional headquarters to promote wider participation.

The minister instructed transport authorities to accelerate construction on the Yellow Line BRT, including depots, infrastructure, and the second phase of the Taj Haider Bridge. He emphasized that the relocation of utilities blocking the project must be expedited to maintain development momentum.

With the introduction of double-decker buses, electric buses, and expanded routes, Karachi is set to take a major step toward a modern, sustainable, and efficient public transport ecosystem.
