The Punjab Masstransit Authority (PMA) has taken another significant step towards transforming Pakistan’s public transport ecosystem by launching a QR-based digital payment system for electric buses operating across the province. This innovative upgrade eliminates the need for passengers to carry physical cards, making travel more modern, seamless, and technology-driven. The new digital payment feature has officially been integrated into the eTransit Punjab mobile application, enabling commuters to manage travel fares directly through their smartphones.
Available for Android users, the eTransit Punjab app allows passengers to register using their mobile numbers, create a secure profile, and recharge their in-app wallet with ease. Once the wallet balance is available, commuters can enable the QR payment feature by activating the QR mode within the application, which auto-generates a unique and dynamic QR code for every trip.
The QR payment method has been synchronized with on-board Point-of-Sale (POS) devices installed inside the electric buses. During boarding, riders simply scan the QR code using the bus POS machine, after which the system instantly deducts the fare from the user’s digital wallet. This eliminates manual transactions, reduces boarding delays, and supports a cashless and cardless travel experience—ultimately enhancing passenger efficiency, privacy, and convenience.
Benefits of the QR-Based Transport Payment System
The new feature is expected to bring multiple improvements, including:
- Contactless travel reducing reliance on physical currency
- Faster boarding time with automated fare deduction
- Improved passenger experience through mobile-based accessibility
- Enhanced transparency and monitoring for operators
- Eco-friendly operational support, aligning with electric bus usage
By shifting to smart ticketing technology, Punjab is moving closer to global intelligent transport trends, supporting smart cities, public sector modernization, and sustainable mobility steps already underway through electric bus deployment.
The PMA has encouraged commuters to download and start using the eTransit Punjab app to fully benefit from the province’s digitized mass-transit services.
