The Murree glass train project is set for a major upgrade as Punjab authorities move to connect the alpine tourist destination with the Islamabad International Airport (IIA) via Faizabad. The strategic linkage is expected to drastically improve travel convenience for domestic travelers, global tourists, business commuters, and foreign holidaymakers seeking a smooth journey to the scenic hills of Murree.
To achieve this, the provincial government is preparing to initiate the project from near Lake View Park and the Bhara Kahu bypass, creating a modern, dedicated transit corridor that supports tourism, economic growth, and sustainability.
According to the pre-feasibility study, the project proposes a 40-kilometer rail track stretching from Bhara Kahu bypass to Pindi Point in Murree. The majority of the track will be elevated, allowing the railway to adapt efficiently to steep mountainous terrain without disturbing natural landscapes or road traffic.
A key part of the network includes a 13-kilometer elevated monorail extension from Faizabad to Bhara Kahu bypass, which would connect to the main terminal near Lake View Park. The recommendation is based on an assessment from Nespak, the project’s technical consultant.
A high-level meeting was held between Chief Minister’s Adviser Shahid Ashraf Tarar and CDA Chairman Mohammad Ali Randhawa to finalize integration plans with the capital’s transport infrastructure.
Officials highlighted that the current Islamabad metro track from IIA to Faizabad could be leveraged to support and merge with the upcoming glass-covered elevated monorail, creating seamless passenger connectivity without duplication of infrastructure.
Future plans may include an extended track from Rawat to Faizabad via the Expressway, improving multi-city mobility and reducing vehicle congestion.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has directed authorities to begin work soon, emphasizing Murree’s suitability for an elevated transit system due to its altitude and terrain, similar to the historic British-era Shimla rail link—a renowned engineering marvel built at over 2,200 meters elevation.
The Murree glass train is expected to:
The Capital Development Authority (CDA) will now conduct a detailed feasibility study based on the initial Nespak report before moving toward design approval, PC-1 preparation, funding strategy, and groundbreaking.
