Peshawar to Introduce Electric Rickshaws for Cleaner, Greener Urban Transport

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government is taking a significant step toward sustainable mobility with plans to introduce electric rickshaws (e-rickshaws) in Peshawar. The initiative, led by the Planning and Development (P&D) Department, aims to create a cleaner, quieter, and more energy-efficient transportation system for the provincial capital.

Project Steering Committee Reviews Progress

A Project Steering Committee meeting, chaired by P&D Secretary Adeel Shah, was held earlier this week to assess the project’s progress and define the roadmap for implementation. The meeting brought together officials from the Transport Department, P&D, and other government stakeholders who discussed operational strategies, technical requirements, and long-term goals.

The committee emphasized that electric rickshaws could play a crucial role in reducing air pollution and lowering fuel dependency, both of which are key environmental challenges in Peshawar. The initiative is also expected to enhance urban mobility by providing residents with a cleaner and more affordable public transport alternative.

Advancing Sustainable Urban Mobility

During the meeting, officials highlighted the broader benefits of e-rickshaws, including reduced carbon emissions, quieter operations, and lower maintenance costs compared to traditional petrol-powered rickshaws. Infrastructure upgrades—such as charging stations and battery maintenance facilities—were also discussed to ensure the project’s long-term sustainability.

This project aligns with Pakistan’s national goal of adopting green transportation technologies to combat climate change and promote eco-friendly urban living. Peshawar’s adoption of e-rickshaws could serve as a model for other cities in the province and beyond.

Toward a Cleaner Future

By integrating electric vehicles into the city’s public transport network, the KP government aims to position Peshawar as a pioneer of green mobility in Pakistan. With strong interdepartmental coordination and strategic investment in infrastructure, the e-rickshaw project promises to make daily commuting more efficient, affordable, and environmentally responsible.

As the initiative moves toward implementation, Peshawar residents can look forward to a future where urban transport is not only convenient but also contributes to a cleaner and healthier environment.
