The Punjab government has finally decided to begin the repair and restoration of the Orange Line Metro Train, marking a major step toward improving Lahore’s urban transport infrastructure. The decision ends a two-year delay in maintenance work and underscores the government’s renewed commitment to providing citizens with a safe, efficient, and comfortable travel experience.

In a directive issued this week, Chief Minister Punjab instructed the Punjab Mass Transit Authority (PMTA) to take immediate action to rehabilitate the deteriorating Orange Line Metro infrastructure. The Finance Department has been ordered to release over Rs. 500 million immediately for the project’s maintenance and restoration work.

Addressing Long-Standing Infrastructure Challenges

According to an official statement, the released funds will be used to address critical issues that have plagued the metro system for years. The Chief Minister emphasized that repairing water, sanitation, and leakage systems must be prioritized to prevent further damage and ensure commuter safety.

A recent Mass Transit Authority report highlighted extensive maintenance problems:

  • Water leakage at 742 points
  • Water accumulation at 24 sites
  • Drainage issues at 834 locations
  • Wastewater disposal problems at 68 points

These problems have contributed to operational inefficiencies, infrastructure damage, and passenger inconvenience—prompting urgent government intervention.

Restoration Work to Begin Immediately

Officials confirmed that repair work will begin immediately along the Orange Line Metro’s tracks and stations. Specialized teams will focus on fixing leakage points, improving drainage systems, and upgrading the train’s water and sanitation infrastructure.

The Orange Line Metro Train, Pakistan’s first urban rapid transit system, serves thousands of commuters daily across Lahore. Over time, insufficient maintenance and water damage have led to service disruptions and passenger complaints. The latest initiative aims to restore full operational efficiency and ensure long-term sustainability of the system.

Improving Lahore’s Public Transport Experience

The Chief Minister stated that this project represents a key milestone in Lahore’s public transport revival. “Every citizen deserves a reliable, safe, and high-quality mode of travel,” he said, reiterating that all pending maintenance tasks must be completed within the stipulated timeframe.

With funds now released and repair work set to commence, the Punjab government’s proactive move is expected to significantly enhance commuter comfort, reduce breakdowns, and extend the lifespan of the Orange Line Metro Train system.
