PAMA Warns Against Unsafe EV Battery Technologies in Pakistan

The Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association (PAMA) has issued a strong warning to the government regarding the use of unsafe EV battery technologies in Pakistan. The association cautioned that poor-quality and outdated batteries are flooding the market, posing risks to consumers and slowing down the nation’s transition toward clean mobility.

Outdated EV Batteries Undermining Consumer Trust

In an official statement released Wednesday, PAMA Director General Abdul Waheed Khan said that while government subsidies aim to promote electric vehicle (EV) adoption, buyers still face heavy expenses for vehicles fitted with low-quality batteries.

“The government should not compel consumers to buy vehicles fitted with poor-quality batteries disguised as advanced technology,” Khan emphasized.

He noted that most local EV manufacturers only offer a 24-month warranty on such batteries, compared to five-year warranties for globally approved lithium-ion batteries. This discrepancy, Khan warned, erodes consumer trust and damages the credibility of Pakistan’s growing EV market.

Misleading Data and Deceptive Marketing Practices

Khan also accused some industry players of spreading false information to distort global EV production statistics. These misleading figures, he said, confuse both policymakers and the public, creating uncertainty in Pakistan’s electric mobility plans.

PAMA’s findings reveal that over 90% of electric two-wheelers currently on Pakistan’s roads use lead-acid batteries coated with a thin layer of graphene—a marketing ploy falsely presented as modern technology. “This is pure deception,” Khan said, adding that such practices risk discrediting Pakistan’s EV transition before it fully begins.

PAMA Calls for Stricter EV Battery Standards

To ensure consumer protection and sustainable EV adoption, PAMA has urged the government to enforce strict international standards for EV batteries and to limit subsidies to vehicles that use proven and globally recognized technologies.

The association stressed that public funds should not be used to support manufacturers relying on outdated or unsafe components. Instead, Pakistan should focus on lithium-ion and other advanced battery chemistries that meet international safety, efficiency, and environmental standards.

A Call for Transparency and Long-Term Policy Reform

PAMA concluded that transparency, regulation, and accountability are essential for building consumer confidence and attracting investment in Pakistan’s EV industry. Without strong oversight, the country’s ambitious clean mobility goals could falter before they gain traction.
