Punjab E-Taxi Scheme 2025

The highlight of the expo was the launch of the Punjab E-Taxi Scheme 2025, designed to combat unemployment while promoting sustainable transport.

  • First Phase: Distribution of 1,100 electric taxis.
  • Target Beneficiaries: Youth, particularly those working in ride-hailing services.
  • Financing Plan: 30% down payment (Rs. 18–20 lakh) with interest-free monthly installments of around Rs. 60,000.
  • Timeline: Registrations opened on September 1, 2025; distribution to begin in December 2025.
  • Launch Cities: Lahore, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, and Multan.

This scheme is expected to create thousands of jobs while reducing the environmental footprint of private transport.

Pakistan’s First Intercity Electric Coach

Daewoo Express made headlines by introducing Pakistan’s first fully electric intercity bus, operating on the Lahore–Sargodha route.

  • Model: Golden Dragon electric coach.
  • Battery: 350 kWh, enabling long-distance travel.
  • Power: Equivalent to a 5,500–6,000cc diesel engine with smoother acceleration and zero emissions.
  • Infrastructure: Supported by a 240 kW fast charger installed by Daewoo.

This milestone demonstrates that long-distance EV travel is now possible on Pakistani highways.

Yutong Hybrid Buses

The expo also displayed Yutong DMT hybrid buses, combining electric motors with conventional engines for 30–50% fuel savings.

  • Variants:
    • Smaller 9-meter bus (61 passengers).
    • Larger 12-meter bus (95 passengers).
  • Purpose: Reduce operational costs and emissions while offering reliable city transport.

Although rollout dates have not been confirmed, these buses are expected to complement Lahore’s existing electric fleet.

SRT Tram Project

Perhaps the most futuristic reveal was the Super Autonomous Rapid Transit (SRT) tram, developed by Norinco International.

  • Technology: Tram without rails, guided by sensors and cameras on virtual tracks.
  • Advantages: Faster and cheaper deployment than metro or light rail.
  • Phase One: Around 18 trams planned for launch next year.
  • Capacity: Each tram can carry up to 320 passengers—equivalent to 4–5 standard buses.

This project could significantly ease urban congestion while offering modern, eco-friendly mass transit.

The Punjab Transport Expo 2025 highlighted the government’s bold vision to modernize Punjab’s transport ecosystem. With initiatives like the E-Taxi Scheme, electric coaches, hybrid buses, and the innovative SRT tram, the province is moving toward a greener, more efficient, and employment-friendly future. These projects not only align with global trends in sustainable mobility but also promise to transform the daily lives of millions of Pakistanis.
