The Punjab Traffic Police has made history by introducing Pakistan’s first AI-based driving test car, a groundbreaking step towards modernizing the driving license system. This innovation is designed to automate driving tests, reduce human involvement, and ensure complete transparency.
According to DIG Punjab Waqas, who demonstrated the prototype in an interview with City42, the project will officially be launched by the Chief Minister in the upcoming fiscal year. Once implemented, around 200 AI-powered vehicles will be deployed across Punjab to conduct automated license tests.
How the AI-Based Driving Test Works
The process begins with biometric verification. Candidates confirm their identity using a fingerprint sensor located on the right side of the steering column, ensuring that only registered applicants can attempt the test.
Once verified, instructions are displayed on a built-in digital screen inside the car. The AI-based system is equipped with:
- Hi-tech sensors to monitor movements.
- Facial recognition cameras to track driver behavior.
- Exterior cameras to detect mistakes such as cone hits, wrong turns, or missed signals.
The entire driving performance is recorded and analyzed by AI software. At the end of the test, the system automatically evaluates whether the candidate has passed or failed, with no human examiner involved.
Eliminating Corruption and Ensuring Transparency
One of the major goals of this initiative is to remove corruption and human bias from the driving test process. By automating results, the chances of unfair practices or manipulation are drastically reduced. Additionally, test results will be instantly uploaded to a secure database, making the system more reliable and tamper-proof.
A Step Towards Digital Transformation
This move by Punjab Traffic Police reflects Pakistan’s growing shift towards digital governance and AI adoption. By integrating artificial intelligence into everyday systems, the province is setting a benchmark for transparency and efficiency in public services.
As Punjab gears up for the official rollout, the AI-based driving test car is expected to revolutionize the licensing system, making it fairer, more reliable, and corruption-free.
