In a major development for Sindh’s railway infrastructure, Federal Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi has announced the launch of a new Karachi-Sukkur passenger train with a substantial investment of Rs. 6 billion. The announcement was made during a high-level meeting with Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, focusing on improving regional connectivity and reviving stalled railway projects.

The upcoming train service will feature modern air-conditioned coaches, providing passengers with enhanced comfort and convenience. Pakistan Railways is also upgrading the existing tracks along this route to ensure smoother and faster travel between Karachi and Sukkur, two of Sindh’s most important cities.

Revival of Karachi Circular Railway (KCR) in Focus

Alongside the new train project, the long-delayed Karachi Circular Railway (KCR) was also discussed. Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah emphasized that the KCR project had already faced years of delays and urged immediate collaboration between Pakistan Railways and the provincial government to expedite its revival.

The chief minister proposed outsourcing certain operations to improve efficiency and service delivery, while also calling for priority upgrades to the Karachi-to-Rohri rail line. According to Shah, this upgrade would provide significant relief to commuters by reducing travel time and increasing the line’s passenger capacity.

Clearing Encroachments for Better Infrastructure

Both sides also agreed on the urgent need to remove encroachments along railway tracks, a key step toward facilitating new projects and ensuring uninterrupted rail operations in the future.

The launch of the Karachi-Sukkur passenger train marks an important step toward modernizing Pakistan’s railway network. Combined with the revival of the Karachi Circular Railway, these initiatives are expected to significantly improve intercity travel, reduce traffic congestion, and provide commuters with more reliable transport options.
