By The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has approved a new traffic safety law requiring two drivers for all passenger and freight vehicles covering 365 kilometers or more. The legislation, aimed at reducing accidents and enhancing road safety, will apply to buses, trucks, and trailers traveling long distances across Pakistan.
Purpose of the New Law
According to government officials, the measure is designed to:
- Reduce road accidents caused by drowsy or overworked drivers
- Prevent driver fatigue on extended journeys
- Ensure passenger and cargo safety during intercity and cross-country travel
The rule specifically covers vehicles operating from Peshawar to major destinations such as Lahore, Karachi, and Quetta.
Penalties for Non-Compliance
Drivers and transport companies found violating the law will face fines ranging from Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 10,000. The provincial traffic police, in coordination with other relevant departments, has been instructed to ensure strict enforcement of the regulation.
A Step Toward Safer Roads
Long-distance travel often results in driver exhaustion, a leading cause of road accidents in Pakistan. With the new law, drivers will be able to share responsibilities, take rest breaks, and maintain better focus on the road. This is expected to lower accident rates, especially on highways and intercity routes that see heavy traffic.
Experts believe the move could also set a precedent for other provinces, making two-driver rules a nationwide standard for long-haul journeys. By prioritizing safety, the KP government hopes to protect both passengers and freight cargo, ensuring smoother and more reliable transport services.
