Karachi to Get a New 25-Km Road Parallel to Lyari Expressway for Heavy Traffic

NHA Rules Out Lyari Elevated Corridor

The National Highways Authority (NHA) has officially ruled out the Lyari Elevated Freight Corridor in Karachi, estimating the mega project would cost around Rs68.9 billion. Officials informed the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Economic Affairs that the plan required a substantial Viability Gap Fund and loans covering nearly 35% of expenses, making it financially unfeasible.

Instead of pursuing the elevated freight route, the NHA is now turning attention to more practical options for freight transport improvement in Karachi.

Karachi Northern Bypass Upgrade Under Review

The leading alternative is the Karachi Northern Bypass (KNB), which currently operates as a two-lane highway. Under the new proposal, it may be expanded into a four- to six-lane motorway-standard bypass, creating a modern corridor for freight and heavy transport vehicles.

This upgrade is expected to:

  • Reduce logistics costs for exporters and importers.
  • Improve cargo movement from Karachi’s ports to upcountry destinations.
  • Ease traffic congestion inside the city by diverting heavy vehicles.
  • Strengthen supply chains across Pakistan.

Committee Recommendations and NHA Strategy

During the meeting, MNA Muhammad Jawed Hanif Khan stressed that improving freight mobility is crucial for Pakistan’s trade competitiveness. He highlighted that the Karachi Northern Bypass upgrade could play a pivotal role in reducing transportation costs and time.

The Standing Committee also recommended adding the Lyari Elevated Corridor to the Public Sector Development Program (PSDP). However, NHA officials confirmed that a broader freight mobility plan for Karachi is already in progress, aiming to modernize logistics infrastructure with cost-effective solutions.

Why Karachi Northern Bypass Upgrade Matters?

As Pakistan’s commercial hub, Karachi handles the majority of the country’s imports and exports through its two ports. Efficient and modern highways are essential to support economic growth, trade facilitation, and urban mobility.

By transforming the Karachi Northern Bypass into a six-lane motorway, the NHA could not only strengthen freight handling but also relieve pressure on Karachi’s urban roads, ensuring smoother connectivity between the city, industrial zones, and national highways.

The move signals a shift in focus toward sustainable infrastructure development, balancing costs with long-term trade benefits.
