Rawalpindi is preparing for a major infrastructure upgrade as the Kutchery Chowk remodeling project, valued at Rs. 6.494 billion, is scheduled to begin next month. The initiative is part of the Punjab government’s vision to create a signal-free corridor from Koral Chowk to Motorway Chowk, aimed at reducing traffic congestion and improving city mobility.
According to officials, the Punjab Highway Department has already started land marking for the project. A meeting chaired by Deputy Commissioner Dr. Hassan Waqar Cheema reviewed progress and directed utility departments—including SNGPL, IESCO, PTCL, WASA, and the Cantonment Boards—to submit cost estimates for shifting their services.
More than 36 kanals of land will be required for the project. Most of this land belongs to state-owned institutions such as Fatima Jinnah Women University, Pakistan Army, the commissioner’s office, and the income tax department.
One of the key challenges will be traffic management. The intersection currently accommodates over 250,000 vehicles daily, making it one of the busiest in the city. The deputy commissioner has instructed the Highway Department to share traffic count data with Rawalpindi police to ensure smooth diversions and minimize congestion during the construction phase.
Masab Ali, Sub-Divisional Officer of the Highway Department, stated that the project will cover a 2.5-kilometer stretch, with utility shifting set to begin within a week. The Kutchery Chowk remodeling is one of three major projects approved for Rawalpindi by the Punjab government on August 11. The other two include:
Together, these projects represent a significant step toward modernizing Rawalpindi’s road network and easing traffic pressure across the city.
Once complete, the Rawalpindi Kutchery Chowk remodeling project is expected to drastically reduce travel times, improve fuel efficiency, and enhance commuter safety. By addressing a major bottleneck in the city’s traffic system, the project will not only benefit daily commuters but also strengthen connectivity between Rawalpindi and Islamabad.
