The Ministry of Maritime Affairs, Pakistan, has officially granted its first international ferry service license to global operator Sea Keepers, authorizing routes connecting Pakistan with Iran and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. The decision followed a high-level meeting involving representatives from the Ministries of Maritime Affairs, Foreign Affairs, Defense, and Interior, as well as the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation and port authorities.

Strengthening Regional Connectivity through Sea Routes

According to Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, this milestone is aligned with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s vision and Pakistan’s National Maritime Policy. The ferry service aims to strengthen regional connectivity, support religious tourism, and create new economic opportunities.

The ferry routes are expected to serve:

  • Pilgrims traveling to Iran and Iraq
  • Workers and tourists heading to GCC countries
  • Pakistani diaspora seeking affordable travel options

Initial Operations from Karachi and Gwadar Ports

The initial operations will be launched from Karachi and Gwadar, using modern, well-equipped ferries that ensure safe, comfortable, and affordable travel. These vessels will feature:

  • Onboard amenities for long-distance travel
  • Passenger safety and comfort provisions
  • Economical fare options compared to air travel

Economic and Strategic Benefits of the Ferry Service

The international ferry service from Pakistan is set to deliver multiple benefits:

  • Reduced burden on land routes and airports
  • Increased affordability of travel for middle-income groups
  • Boost to maritime trade and logistics
  • Promotion of blue economy and marine tourism

The service is expected to cater to hundreds of thousands of travelers annually. Based on demand and bilateral maritime agreements, the government plans to expand ferry routes and port calls in the near future.

Part of Pakistan’s Blue Economy Vision

This initiative is a strategic component of Pakistan’s blue economy framework, aimed at:

  • Enhancing sea-based logistics and transportation
  • Promoting sustainable maritime infrastructure
  • Supporting regional trade and cultural exchange

The launch of Pakistan’s first international ferry service marks a transformative step in the country’s maritime sector. It opens new pathways for regional cooperation, religious tourism, and cost-effective sea travel — all while aligning with national policy goals for sustainable development.
