In a significant move towards sustainable urban mobility, Islamabad is preparing to launch its first-ever electric tram bus service, aiming to revolutionize the public transportation network in the federal capital. The project is part of a broader initiative spearheaded by Capital Development Authority (CDA) Chairman and Chief Commissioner Islamabad, Muhammad Ali Randhawa.

Bus Stop Upgrades & New Infrastructure

As part of this major transit overhaul, work is already underway to upgrade 140 existing bus stops, while over 200 new stops are also planned. These modernized stops will feature digital information boards, providing real-time updates on bus and tram schedules, safety guidelines, and advertisements.

Chairman Randhawa emphasized that improving public transport for Islamabad’s citizens remains a top priority, and he directed that the tram feasibility study be expedited. The goal is to offer residents more efficient, accessible, and environmentally friendly commuting options.

Features of the Electric Tram System

The proposed electric tram system will include multiple compartments to handle a larger passenger capacity. Special attention is being given to inclusivity, with design features that accommodate women and differently-abled individuals.

The feasibility study is currently exploring sustainable financial models, including the potential for public-private partnerships to support the project. These collaborations aim to ensure long-term viability and operational efficiency.

Building on Electric Bus Success

Islamabad’s existing electric bus service has already proven to be a game-changer, transporting over 90,000 passengers daily with a reputation for being eco-friendly, cost-effective, and reliable. The tram service will build upon this momentum, further reducing traffic congestion and environmental impact in the city.

This initiative reflects Islamabad’s broader vision of becoming a modern, green, and commuter-friendly capital, setting an example for urban mobility solutions across Pakistan.
