Islamabad’s roads are set for a significant upgrade as Muhammad Ali Randhawa, Chairman of the Capital Development Authority (CDA) and Chief Commissioner Islamabad, has directed officials to install pelican crossings and advanced traffic light systems on key highways across the capital.

This move, announced during a high-level review meeting at the CDA Headquarters on Saturday, aims to make Islamabad’s roads safer and more efficient for both pedestrians and motorists. The session was attended by CDA Board Members, including Talat Mehmood (Administration and Estate), Syed Nafasat Raza (Engineering), Esfandyar Baloch (Environment), Dr. Khalid Hafiz (Planning), Tahir Naeem (Finance), and other senior officials.

Major Roads to Get Infrastructure Upgrades

Chairman Randhawa emphasized that the introduction of Islamabad pelican crossings is part of a broader effort to modernize the capital’s transport infrastructure. Major thoroughfares, including Islamabad Expressway, Jinnah Avenue, Srinagar Highway, Margalla Road, Club Road, Park Road, and Faisal Avenue, will benefit from these upgrades.

The CDA’s MPO Wing reported ongoing maintenance work such as lane markings, kerb repairs, and patchwork to keep roads in top condition. Existing zebra crossings and pedestrian bridges are also being renovated to ensure safe and convenient crossings for pedestrians.

Beautification and Environmental Initiatives

In addition to traffic management, Randhawa directed the CDA to accelerate work on beautifying Islamabad’s urban landscape. Key projects include redesigning major roundabouts with artistic features, upgrading footpaths, improving green spaces, and maintaining road medians.

To address urban pollution, Randhawa also ordered the plantation of more urban forests along main roads. These green belts are expected to enhance the city’s natural beauty while contributing to better air quality.

Focus on Cultural Integration and Modern Amenities

During the meeting, the CDA team also discussed redesign plans for the Rawal Chowk Interchange, with Randhawa calling for the integration of cultural motifs representing all provinces, including Islamabad’s unique identity. Plans were shared for installing modern SMD screens and decorative lighting, which will add a modern touch to the city’s urban landscape.

To improve pedestrian safety further, Randhawa instructed officials to renovate existing pedestrian bridges on major roads and construct new ones along Park Road, a busy stretch known for heavy foot traffic.

Fast-Tracked Funding for Timely Completion

To prevent project delays, the CDA Finance Department has been directed to expedite the release of funds for all ongoing and upcoming development works. This will help ensure timely completion of road upgrades and beautification projects.

Islamabad Pelican Crossings: A Safer, Smarter Capital

With these new measures, the CDA aims to create a safer, greener, and more pedestrian-friendly Islamabad. The planned Islamabad pelican crossings and advanced traffic lights will improve road discipline, reduce accidents, and make the capital’s infrastructure more aligned with international standards.

As Islamabad grows, these improvements reflect a clear commitment to sustainable urban development, smart transport management, and a better quality of life for all residents.
